The following describes the operation methods of the Direct Sample Introduction Unit (DI) DI-2010.
For details on workstation operation methods, refer to the User's Manual and appropriate Help screens. (DI-2010 is an option.)

1. Attach the guide rail of the sample introduction probe.
2. (1) Make sure that the lever of the sample introduction section is set to the "CLOSE" position. If it is not, change the lever position to "CLOSE".
(2) Attach the lever on the rear side of the guide rail to the plate at the bottom of the sample introduction section.
(3) Pass the protrusion (enclosed part in the photo) through the hole in the guide rail, and tighten the screws (two locations) while pressing the protrusion against the guide rail to fix the guide rail in place.

3. Prepare the sample introduction probe, and set the probe upright on a desk or other flat surface.
NOTE: Wear clean gloves when performing maintenance. Be sure to wipe off any dirt from the tools used for maintenance using gauze moistened with acetone.

4. Remove the cap from the tip of the probe.
(1) Grip the notched section of the cap with the tweezers and turn the cap.
(2) When it is no longer attached to the probe, remove it upwards.

5. Attach the vial (sample pot).
6. Fill the sample pot with sample.
In the case of liquid samples, use the microsyringe to inject sample onto the bottom of the sample pot.
Leave the sample pot for a while to allow solvents to vaporize.
In the case of solid samples, put a small amount of sample into the sample pot with tweezers or other tool.

CAUTION: The maximum injection amount is 25 μL. However, the ion source sometimes is unnecessarily contaminated if there is too much sample.
7. (1) Cover with the cap.
(2) Grip the notched section with the tweezers, and turn it by about 90°.
(3) Make sure that the cap is fixed to the probe tip.

NOTE: Replace with a new cap if the cap cannot be fixed in place.
8. Remove the stop plug (enclosed part in the photo on the top left) from the probe introduction section.

9. Insert the probe guide until it comes to a stop at the pin position. (enclosed part in the photo)
10. Move the lever to the "PUMP" position to pre-extract air and create a vacuum in the sample introduction section.
Make sure that the stopper falls down. You will temporarily hear extraction noise from the rotary pump.

11. Gently turn the lever on the sample introduction section as far as it can go. The valve of the sample introduction section is now fully open.
During this step, hold the sample introduction probe in a fixed position with your other hand.
NOTE: Otherwise, the difference between the atmospheric and vacuum pressures might cause the sample introduction probe to be sucked into the sample introduction section.

12. <Start of Measurement>
(1) Gently insert the sample introduction probe until its tip comes into contact with the ion source.
(2) Insert the sample introduction probe and connect the connector. The red LED lights momentarily. Also, the red LED blinks when the heater starts to heat up.
(3) After inserting the probe, press the Analysis Start button to start data acquisition. (The probe can also be inserted after starting data acquisition).

CAUTION: When inserting the probe, take sufficient care of your fingers since they might become nipped between the probe and the connector cover (black) on the front of the sample introduction section.
NOTE: In actual measurement, completely insert the sample introduction probe after completing preparations for analysis in the Data Acquisition window on the [GCMS Real Time Analysis] workstation.
13. <Finishing Measurement>
Pull the sample introduction probe by about 1 mm towards you, and wait for the temperature of the sample introduction probe to fall to 150 °C. (The red LED goes out at 150 °C or below.)
CAUTION: If the sample introduction probe is drawn out under high temperature, heat will damage the vacuum seal.

14. When the temperature of the sample introduction probe has fallen to 150 °C or below, gently draw out the probe towards you by hand until the guide comes into contact, and then fix it at that position.
15. Move the lever of the sample introduction section to the "CLOSE" position to close the valve at that section.
The atmosphere is introduced into the sample introduction section, and the inside of the sample introduction section returns to atmospheric pressure.

16. Completely draw out the sample introduction probe.
CAUTION: Take sufficient care when handling the sample introduction probe after measurement. Its tip is hot and might cause burns.
